Flipbook

Digital Publishing

An interactive digital publication with realistic page-turning animations powered by Three.js.

Definition

A flipbook is an interactive digital publication that simulates the experience of turning pages in a physical book or magazine. Unlike a static PDF that displays flat pages in a scroll-and-zoom interface, a flipbook renders pages with animated transitions — typically a realistic page-curl or page-flip effect — making the reading experience more engaging and tactile. Modern flipbooks are viewed in a browser and can include embedded links, video, audio, [CTA buttons](/glossary/call-to-action-cta), [lead capture forms](/glossary/lead-capture), and other interactive elements that static files cannot support. The term originates from physical flip books — small booklets where rapidly flipping pages creates the illusion of animation.

Why It Matters

Static PDFs often go unread because they lack visual engagement. Recipients download the file, glance at the first page, and move on. Flipbooks hold reader attention longer by providing a familiar, book-like experience that encourages page-by-page exploration. For marketers and publishers, this translates to higher read-through rates, better lead capture opportunities, and a more polished brand presentation compared to downloadable file attachments. Flipbooks also give publishers [analytics](/glossary/analytics-dashboard) on exactly which pages readers view and where they drop off — data that is impossible to collect with a plain PDF.

How It Works in FlipLink

FlipLink converts any PDF into a flipbook using Three.js to render realistic 3D page-flip animations with lighting, shadows, and depth. You upload your PDF through the [Create Flipbooks](/features/create-flipbooks) feature, and FlipLink generates a shareable link within seconds. Each flipbook supports branding customization, CTA buttons, lead capture forms, analytics, [password protection](/glossary/password-protection), [custom domains](/glossary/custom-domain), and more. Readers view the flipbook in any modern browser without installing software. FlipLink also offers a [document viewer](/glossary/document-viewer) mode powered by PDF.js for content that suits a traditional reading layout instead.
