The Fold Decides Everything

Before you pick a font, before you crop a photo, before you write a single headline — pick the fold.

The fold sets the reading order. It tells the reader which panel they see first, which one opens up next, and which one delivers the call to action at the end.

Most brochure mistakes are not design mistakes. They are sequence mistakes — designed flat on a screen, folded later, and discovered too late that the headline ended up on the back panel.

This guide walks through the six brochure folds you actually need to know, with step-by-step folding instructions, finished sizes, and the use cases each one was built for. It is meant to read like a workshop bench: paper in front of you, ruler in hand, fold along.

Before You Fold: Get the Paper Size Right

Two paper sizes cover almost every printed brochure on earth.

In the United States, letter size is the default: 8.5 × 11 inches (216 × 279 mm). It runs through every office printer and matches the inventory of every commercial print shop in the country.

Everywhere else, A4 (210 × 297 mm) is the standard. It is slightly narrower and slightly taller than letter, which changes panel widths on a trifold by about a centimeter — small, but enough to throw off a template designed for the wrong region.

Specialty brochures use other sizes:

  • Legal (8.5 × 14 in) for long trifolds with extra panel real estate.
  • Tabloid / A3 (11 × 17 in / 297 × 420 mm) for gate-fold and accordion brochures with poster-sized impact.
  • Square (8.5 × 8.5 in or 200 × 200 mm) for high-end fashion and lifestyle work.

Paper Grain Direction Matters

Every sheet of paper has a grain — the direction the fibers run during manufacturing.

Fold with the grain and you get a clean, crisp crease. Fold against the grain and you get a cracked, ragged spine, especially on heavier stocks above 100 gsm.

For long-edge folds (half-fold and trifold on letter), you want long-grain paper. Most commercial brochure stock is supplied this way by default, but it is worth asking the printer before you commit to a thousand-unit run.

If you are hand-folding samples at home, a simple test: tear a small strip from each edge of a scrap sheet. The edge that tears cleanly and straight is the with-grain edge. Fold parallel to that tear.


The 6 Brochure Fold Types

Each fold below includes the panel count, the finished size from a letter-size sheet, step-by-step folding instructions, and the use cases the fold was built for.

1. Half-Fold (Single-Fold, Bi-Panel)

Panels: 2. Surfaces: 4 (front, inside-left, inside-right, back). Finished size from 8.5 × 11: 8.5 × 5.5 inches.

The simplest fold. One crease, two panels, four printable surfaces.

How to fold:

  1. Place the sheet flat, printed side down.
  2. Bring the bottom short edge up to meet the top short edge.
  3. Press the crease firmly from the center outward to avoid trapped air bubbles.
  4. The result is a single-fold brochure with a front cover, two inside panels that read as a spread, and a back cover.

Use it for: event programs, art guides, single-spread menus, real estate one-sheets, and conference handouts where you have a hero spread and minimal supporting copy.

The half-fold rewards strong imagery and short copy. Because the entire inside opens at once, it reads more like a magazine spread than a sequenced brochure.

2. Bifold (A Note on the Naming Confusion)

The terms half-fold and bifold are used interchangeably in most print shops, and that is fine.

In strict usage, "bifold" sometimes refers to a folded card or invitation (heavier stock, often scored rather than folded), while "half-fold" refers to a brochure printed on lighter stock. In day-to-day briefs, treat them as synonyms unless your printer specifies otherwise.

If you ask for a "bifold brochure," you will get a half-fold. If you ask for a "bifold invitation," you will get a folded card on heavier stock. The fold itself is identical — one crease, two panels.

3. Trifold (Letter-Fold)

Panels: 3. Surfaces: 6. Finished size from 8.5 × 11: 8.5 × 3.67 inches per panel.

The most common brochure fold in existence. If someone hands you a brochure on the street, it is probably a trifold.

How to fold:

  1. Place the sheet flat, printed side down, in landscape orientation (the 11-inch edge running left-to-right).
  2. Divide the sheet into three vertical panels, each roughly 3.67 inches wide.
  3. Fold the right panel inward, over the middle panel. This panel becomes the inside-right when the brochure is closed.
  4. Fold the left panel over the top of the folded right panel. This panel becomes the front cover.
  5. Press both creases firmly.

A subtle but important detail: the inside-folding panel (the right one) should be cut slightly narrower than the other two — about 1/16 to 1/8 of an inch — so it tucks cleanly inside without forcing the outer panels to bulge. Professional templates account for this automatically. Hand-built templates often do not, and that is where most amateur trifolds bend instead of fold flat.

Use it for: real estate listings, service overviews, restaurant takeaway menus, healthcare patient guides, and product brochures with a clear three-step story.

4. Z-Fold (Zigzag)

Panels: 3. Surfaces: 6. Finished size from 8.5 × 11: 8.5 × 3.67 inches per panel.

Same panel count as a trifold, completely different fold logic.

Where a trifold nests panels inside one another, a z-fold folds them in alternating directions — forming the shape of the letter Z when viewed from the side.

How to fold:

  1. Place the sheet flat, printed side down, in landscape orientation.
  2. Divide into three equal vertical panels.
  3. Fold the right panel forward (toward you).
  4. Fold the left panel backward (away from you), reversing the direction.
  5. The brochure now collapses into a stacked zigzag, with all three panels equal in width.

Because the panels are equal, you do not need the slight cut-back trick the trifold requires.

Use it for: step-by-step instructions, infographics, timeline content, and any brochure where each panel reveals the next step in a sequence. The reader unfolds left-to-right, seeing each panel in order rather than opening to a full inside spread.

5. Gate-Fold

Panels: 4. Surfaces: 6 (two outer flaps, one inside center panel that spans the full width, one back). Finished size from 11 × 17: 11 × 8.5 inches closed, opening to an 11 × 17 reveal.

The gate-fold is built for drama. The outer two panels meet at the center like double doors. Open them and a full-width reveal panel appears.

How to fold:

  1. Start with a sheet at least twice as wide as your intended closed size — tabloid (11 × 17) is the standard starting point for a finished 11 × 8.5 closed brochure.
  2. Place the sheet flat, printed side down.
  3. Fold the right panel inward so its left edge meets the vertical center of the sheet.
  4. Fold the left panel inward so its right edge meets the vertical center.
  5. The two flaps should meet exactly at the center with a small gap of about 1/32 inch to prevent forcing.

The two outer flaps are each exactly half the width of the central reveal panel.

Use it for: luxury catalogs, fashion lookbooks, real estate hero properties, automotive launches, and any brochure where the inside reveal is the entire point.

6. Accordion (Multi-Fold Zigzag)

Panels: 4 or more (usually 4 to 8). Surfaces: 8 or more.

The accordion is the z-fold scaled up. Same alternating-direction logic, more panels.

How to fold:

  1. Place the sheet flat in landscape orientation.
  2. Divide into 4, 6, or 8 equal vertical panels depending on the design.
  3. Starting from the right, fold the rightmost panel forward.
  4. Fold the next panel backward.
  5. Continue alternating directions across the entire sheet.
  6. The result collapses into a stacked accordion that pulls open into a long horizontal strip.

Accordion folds work best on slightly heavier stock (100 to 150 gsm). Lighter paper does not hold the alternating creases cleanly across multiple folds.

Use it for: timelines, photo journeys, multi-step processes, museum exhibition guides, and long-form narrative brochures where the reader pulls the whole strip open and reads as a continuous panorama.

7. Bonus: Roll-Fold

Panels: 4. Surfaces: 8.

Worth covering as a seventh fold because it solves a real problem the other six do not.

In a roll-fold, four panels are folded inward sequentially, each panel slightly smaller than the one before it. When closed, the brochure looks like a single rolled-up panel. When opened, each panel reveals the next in sequence — the printed equivalent of a slow-motion page turn.

How to fold:

  1. Place the sheet flat in landscape orientation, printed side down.
  2. Cut your four panels with progressively smaller widths — for example, on a 14-inch sheet: panel 1 at 3.625", panel 2 at 3.5", panel 3 at 3.5", panel 4 at 3.375".
  3. Fold the rightmost (smallest) panel inward over the next.
  4. Fold the next panel inward over both.
  5. Continue rolling inward until all four panels are stacked.

The progressively narrower panels prevent the inside-most panels from forcing the outside panels to bulge — the same principle as the trifold cut-back, applied across four layers.

Use it for: instruction manuals, sequential how-to guides, product unboxing-style brochures, and any reveal where the order of disclosure is itself part of the story.

Common Folding Mistakes

Five mistakes show up over and over in amateur and rushed brochure work.

Designing without accounting for unequal panel widths. Trifold panels are not equal. The inside-folding panel is slightly narrower than the other two. Design templates that ignore this produce brochures that bulge instead of fold flat.

Ignoring grain direction. Folding against the grain on heavier stock cracks the crease and exposes white fibers along the spine. Always fold parallel to the grain — for long-edge folds, that means long-grain paper.

Cropping the bleed wrong. Every panel needs a small bleed area (typically 1/8 inch beyond the trim line) so the print extends past the cut. Designs built without bleed produce white edges where the trim was imprecise.

Forgetting the fold in the design phase. Headlines split across crease lines. Photographs of faces cut through the eye. CTAs land on the back panel where no reader looks. Every one of these is a sequence mistake fixed by mocking up the fold on a blank sheet before you ever open the design file.

Planning a saddle-stitch (staple-bound) brochure without thinking about the spine. If your brochure is more than 8 pages, you are not folding — you are binding. For runs under 100, hand-folding is fine if you are careful and use a bone folder to set the crease. For runs over 100, send to a commercial printer with a folding machine — the consistency across the run will be visibly better.

How much bleed area should I leave?

Standard bleed is 1/8 inch (3 mm) past every trim edge. Some printers require 1/4 inch — always check the print shop's spec sheet before exporting.
